The Ball on The Square Makes the Challenges of Tenting in a Public Park Worth the Trouble

Ball on the Square EventQuip Evantine Design EventQuip Tent Rental Philadelphia

The Ball on The Square is one of the most prestigious social events in Philadelphia due to its incredible mission, dedicated membership and desirable location. The 2012 Ball takes place on Thursday, June 21st in the heart of the city at Rittenhouse Square Park. A floating green oasis in an otherwise urban jungle, Rittenhouse Square Park is a precious gem to the residents and businesses that surround it. A gem worth preserving and protecting year after year despite shrinking public funding and ever increasing maintenance costs. The Friends of Rittenhouse Square, the amazing non-profit organization that puts on this incredible shindig every year, relies on the proceeds of the annual Ball on The Square to fund such mundane-yet-necessary maintenance and preservation needs as landscaping, lawn care, arborist services, sidewalk cleaning, fountain maintenance, fence and ironwork repair, security services and holiday lighting.  EventQuip is honored to provide the tenting and weather protection for this prestigious Philadelphia event.  {Photos: Steve Legato}

A Village of Tents Becomes Spectator Plaza for the 2012 NHL Winter Classic

NHL Winter Classic Celebration at Citizens Bank Park Philadelphia Tenting Companies

Once a year, the National Hockey League Winter Classic transforms an outdoor stadium, in this case, Philadelphia’s Citizen’s Bank Park, into an old fashioned ice hockey experience. Working in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia, the NHL extended its celebration of the outdoor game between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers with its official 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® Spectator Plaza. A free, three-day fan festival built in tents just outside the gates of Citizens Bank Park™, Spectator Plaza was an entertainment festival for fans of all ages with live musical performances, interactive hockey-themed attractions, prizes and giveaways, food, beverage, and merchandise tents with officially licensed Rangers® and Flyers® NHL Winter Classic merchandise.  EventQuip installed an entire village of tents and structures to create Spectator Plaza, which included tents for GEICO, Coors, Verizon, Honda, Molson Canadian and Bridgestone, amongst many others.

The Tenting Bar Has Just Been Raised! EventQuip Won a Gala Award for Best Tent Installation at The Special Event 2012!

gala award for best tent installation eventquip the special event

As we shared in our previous post, we were honored to receive two of the three available nominations for Best Tent Installation for the pinnacle of event awards, the Gala Award from Special Event Magazine.

Well, we’re happy to announce that earlier this evening at the Gala Awards Celebration in Tampa, Florida we WON the Gala Award! The award honors our work on one of the most challenging tent installations we produced in 2011: the tent installed for the grand opening of the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. Affectionately called the “Miracle on Fifth Street” by Philadelphia event industry professionals, our award-winning tent installation was built overnight on one of the busiest urban streets in Philadelphia. We invite you to watch the tent as it’s installed exclusively for this prestigious world-class celebration, check it out here.

As ever, we couldn’t be prouder of our accomplishment and thank each and every member of our hard-working tent installation team for their talent, skill and efficiency.  It takes a committed team to make these momentous events happen!

Big Tents Get Washed in GIANT Washing Machines

Our tents travel from one sensational party to the next, week in and week out.  Known for quality equipment and impeccable service, our clients expect our tents to be clean and in good repair.  To maintain such high standards, we need state-of-the-art equipment to wash, dry and repair our thousands of tents on a daily basis.  Our giant tent washing machine, seen above, is capable of washing TENTS as if you’d thrown bath towels into your own washer.  It’s incredible to see, truly. Once washed, our trained production crew will suspend each tent from the ceiling of our production facility to allow quick, complete drying before being returned to our hard-working inventory.

Weathering the Storm: Outdoor Safety Tips for Lightning Storm Season

Under normal weather conditions tents provide an excellent haven for outdoor events.  But let’s remember, tents of any kind are temporary structures made of fabric and are not intended to be occupied during extreme weather conditions.  As we see the Summer season come to a close, and temperatures continue to fluctuate back and forth from one extreme to the other, there’s one thing a every party planner can count on.  Lightning Storms.

Certainly, as Tent Specialists, we know what that means in terms of safety precautions but most people don’t and look to us for advice.  Sadly, that advice doesn’t make many party hosts happy.  But forget about your embarrassment; safety for your guests is the only concern that matters.

WHAT TO DO?

When you have a lightning storm in the vicinity, the best course of action is to evacuate the tent completely, with the safest place being an enclosed building.  To do otherwise would jeopardize the safety of you and all your guests. There really is no viable alternative.  Even if there is only a small chance that someone could be injured, it’s not a chance that any of us should take.

“A safe building is one that is fully enclosed with a roof, walls and floor, and has plumbing or wiring. Examples include a home, school, church, hotel, office building or shopping center.  Once inside, stay away from showers, sinks, bath tubs, and electronic equipment such as TVs, radios, corded telephones and computers. Unsafe buildings include car ports, open garages, covered patios, picnic shelters, beach pavilions, golf shelters, tents of any kinds, baseball dugouts, sheds and greenhouses.” The National Weather Service

WHAT’S THE PLAN?

We highly recommend advance planning with all of the professionals involved in the event to develop and coordinate a thorough emergency plan.  Trying to adjust and solve the problem while it’s happening is NOT a good idea and will only cause chaos under the stressful circumstances.

Here are our tips and suggestions to consider when making those emergency plans:

  • How the decision will be made and by whom? {who has authorization?}
  • Where will the guests go for emergency shelter? {is there a building near by?}
  • Is the emergency shelter prepared for invasion? {beverage service, bathrooms stocked, seating, etc}
  • Who will calmly announce the situation and steer the ship to safe waters? {that includes all service staff, no one  is left in tents}
  • Who will make the decision to return to the tents when/if the storm has passed?

For additional information on thunder and lightning storms turn to the experts at the National Weather Service.  They SEEM to know what they’re talking about. {most of the time, but certainly on safety issues.}

But seriously folks, it’s as easy as the childhood mantra:  When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!

Aerial Photographs of Tents Provide A Bird’s Eye View

Aerial photography is a vitally important commercial skill.  Despite the global recession, real estate constitutes a large portion of our economy and the best way to illustrate the value of a building – temporary or permanent – is with a photograph taken from the air.

Whenever possible, EventQuip owner, Ed Knight takes to the skies in helicopters and small planes to gain an aerial vantage point on the tents his team installs along the East Coast.  This bird’s eye view approach gives him the perspective he needs to survey the completed tent installation from its most dramatic, and revealing, angle.  The sky above.

As the small aircraft circles a tent site, Ed is able to capture images of the tent layout and placement as it relates to other buildings, structures and landscapes.  Always useful for marketing purposes, these photographs will also prove invaluable at EventQuip training sessions and team meetings.

It’s just one more way EventQuip differentiates itself from other tent companies in the marketplace.

Simple Elegance, EventQuip Now Offers Sailcloth Tents for Events

Tents today can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire.  Trust us when we say we’ve seen and done every style!  However,  over the past couple of years, the classically simple, nautically-inspired lines of the sailcloth tent have become a popular party favorite.  Favored by today’s savvy brides and special event planners for their streamlined design and translucent fabric, sailcloth tents bring a lightness and elegance to any outdoor celebration.  Although we enjoy installing fully-enclosed structural tents that can serve as your own private air-conditioned ballroom, there really isn’t anything like the open, airy, light as a feather experience of a sailcloth tent. Whether you’re enjoying a waterside vista in warm natural light or dancing the night away under the glow of the big top, sailcloth tents provide a weather resistant outdoor room that no one will forget.

EventQuip is happy to announce we now offer the rental of sailcloth tents in a variety of sizes for events, weddings and parties. But let’s not forget those finishing details! No sailcloth tent is complete without celebratory pennant flags flying at every peak.  Flags can be ordered in a wide range of colors or custom-designed with your logo or company brand to personalize the event in an original fashion.  We also offer stained wood center and side poles which lend a natural or vintage styling to these beautiful tents.

For more information about the styles and types of sailcloth tenting we offer, or to discuss your event in further detail, please contact one of our Tent Specialists at 215-368-6700.

Welcome to the EventQuip Blog!

Over the past 17 years, we’ve been proud to call ourselves more than a tent company.

Rather, we see ourselves as creative builders who take pride in being an integral part of successful special events. Our hands-on experience has led to a fusion of styles, structures and installations only our highly-trained crew can handle. We’ve built the company by helping our clients bring their vision to life, whether that means a temporary ballroom in a suburban meadow or a semi-permanent structure on a city street.

This blog will serve as a forum to share our philosophy, processes, challenges and successes as we continue our journey to bring your special event dreams to life. We hope that you will enjoy our stories, and share some of your own.
