The Breathing Room

For us at EventQuip, this time of year is a little colder in the office, but our table is always full of snacks, goodies and deliveries from our clients and friends. Its a time for all of us to appreciate what we have and to be thankful for our friends and families. It is also a time that our owner Ed Knight and his wife Janet open their hearts and join others in our community by sponsoring families who are in need. Every year Ed and Janet support a charity close to their hearts called The Breathing Room Foundation. This charitable organization will bring the holiday spirit to over 100 local families by delivering meals, clothing, necessities and gifts to those families that are affected by cancer. Over 300 children will have their “wish lists” fulfilled by the generosity of sponsors and volunteers in the surrounding communities of Philadelphia, Bucks County and Montgomery County. We are honored to be part of this season of giving back, and proud to be a part of giving the families of those who suffer from cancer a little “Breathing Room”.

The Devereux Foundation’s 100th Anniversary Gala

This past Saturday night, we were honored to be the “Tent Sponsor” for the Devereux Foundation’s 100th Anniversary Gala Celebration. The Devereux Foundation is a national non-profit behavioral health organization based in Philadelphia that has been assisting and educating children and adults with intellectual, emotional, developmental, and behavioral challenges for 100 years. This centennial anniversary was celebrated on the upper terrace in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Our sales team and installers have worked with the Philadelphia Museum of Art on other events in the past, and we were asked again to bring our expertise and skill to provide an outdoor venue for this special occasion. Planning sessions for the large clear structure began February 2012, and culminated nine months later with this spectacular sight:

Guests first enjoyed a cocktail hour and silent auction inside the museum itself, then made their way into the 18,042 square foot structure that we had erected just a few days earlier. After a warm welcome from Robert Kreider, the President and CEO of Devereux, the celebration got underway. The Master of Ceremonies was none other than legendary Channel 6 ABC Anchorman, Jim Gardner, who spoke eloquently of the foundation’s accomplishments to the nearly 900 guests. The Mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter was also an honored guest and keynote speaker as well. An inspiring film directed by Sam Katz  told the tale of the last 100 years of Devereux (Devereux, A History).

Following the film, speeches and an exciting live auction, guests enjoyed the beautiful decor by Table Art and creative cuisine by Stephen Starr Events. Then they danced the night away on our wooden parquet dance floor to the energetic EBE band L.A. Stars.

In order to keep the guests comfortable (particularly those in sleeveless evening gowns), we installed our heating system, which was ducted into the structure for a steady supply of warm air. We also used solid glass sidewalls to enclose the tent on the parkway side for extra warmth and an elegant look.

As one of the sponsors for this amazing celebration, EventQuip was lucky to receive a table for ourselves. It was the first time for several of us to actually be inside the tent enjoying the party, instead of working!

Sky High Tenting on the 25th Floor

Last week in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, we set up shop on the 25th floor of a skyscraper. A local company was holding an appreciation party for their partners and needed some additional space for dancing. What better place to celebrate than on a 25th floor terrace overlooking the skyline of our beautiful city?

It started off with a phone call from our client back in August, wondering if we would be physically able to install a tent on their building’s rooftop terrace. So we sent down our Senior Project Manager, Alan, to take a look. After meeting with the client, and discussing their needs and concerns, Alan put together a proposal and a drawing for the client to review. Many factors are considered during a site inspection, and this one presented some unique challenges.

First, take a look at the finished product… here is the interior of the tent, after the lighting and staging company set up, ready for the band and the party!

Now, here’s how we did it! An unusual load-in and load-out was our first issue to tackle. We checked the size of the elevators, stairwells and access points to ensure our equipment would fit inside. We also needed to be confirm that we could properly secure the tent to the building for the safety of the guests.

Once we moved all of the equipment up the freight elevators, the tent assembly itself was similar to a standard ground-level installation. Here, our crew begins assembling the upper portion of the frame of the tent, which gives the tent its overall shape. The clear and white roof panels are installed while the frame is still on the “ground”.

This photo shows the completed basic tent construction. Since we could not stake the tent into the building, it was secured with water ballasts (the white barrels shown) to weigh the tent down. Once the frame is up, we added the white and clear sidewall that the client requested.

Finally, we attached the tent to the building itself using ropes and ratchet straps to secure it for the comfort and safety of our clients and their guests.

Rustic and Elegant Wedding on a Family Farm

We were welcomed to a family’s spectacular home to transform their farm into a  gorgeous setting for a joyous wedding.  As part of the team of event planners, EventQuip provided the main 66′ x 82′ clearspan, clear top European structure on 11′ legs with clear and white sidewall.

The overall rustic design, individual tablescapes and buffet tables were designed and implemented by Sheila Motley from The Event Company based out of Charlottesville, VA.  EventQuip added a rich wood parquet dance floor, and staging for the band to perform.

For the youngest guests, the bride and groom had us set up a separate round sailcloth tent that they outfitted with special activities such as crayons and crafts to keep the kids entertained.  As the guests departed, they each received a special favor as a personal reminder of this beautiful farm-style wedding.
